Youth Board Responsibilities

You should know, first of all, that the Anderson County Fair Youth Board has absolutely nothing at all to do with the carnival; all the rides and games are owned by a separate traveling company. The Youth Board mostly mans the Information Booth and helps small children navigate the Farmer for a Day exhibit in the barn. They are sometimes called on to assist adult members of the Fair Board for various tasks.

The Youth Board meets on the Thursday before the fair begins to help get the building ready for Home-Centered Activities. They have a rubric that they use to judge the business exhibits on Monday afternoon before the Fair opens. They also help people bring their fair entries into the buildings the Saturday before the Fair and the Monday morning of the Fair. On the very last night of the Fair the Youth Board also helps to remove the metal dividers and fold the cloth partitions in the Merchant’s Building.

The Fair is open six nights a week from 5:00-10:00, though the Youth Board schedule is staggered so that members work either the early shift (5:00-7:30) or the later shift (7:30-10:00). New members are always paired with older ones so that they can learn the routine. Depending on the size of the Youth Board, most members only work three or four evenings a week, though they receive free passes to the fair that they may use at any time.

Members of the Youth Board generally elect to keep participating until they graduate from high school. Though students enjoy it thoroughly, it is also a valued act of community service that serves them well when listed on scholarship and college applications.
